A portrait bust in modeling resin in 1:10 scale from the Young Miniatures studio, a Japanese subject dated 1650 according to the name. It is supplied unpainted and is not built like a model: putting the parts together is a matter of minutes, whereas preparing the surface and the painting take up most of the time. Japanese subjects are exceptional among busts in that deeply glossy lacquered surfaces, matte silk cords and fine metal all stand side by side. Each of those three surfaces is painted and finished differently, so it pays to plan the final varnishing in advance.
Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water, because resin holds mold release agent from the mold and neither paint nor primer will stick to it. Cut the casting gates off with a sharp scalpel and finish the surfaces with wet sandpaper; protect your airways while sanding. Dry-fit the parts first so that you know where to fill. Fill the seam with modeling putty or with super glue and an accelerator, sand it back and restore the interrupted texture with a scriber. With lacquered surfaces the smoothness of the base is crucial, because gloss emphasizes every scratch, so finish with a fine grit and water. Apply the primer thinly and in several light passes; a heavy coat would flood the fine texture of the cords.
Build the skin up from a mid-tone layer: glazes in the eye sockets, under the cheekbones and in the corners of the mouth, lightening on the forehead, the bridge of the nose and the chin. Oils let you blend the transitions soft, acrylics layer faster. Paint the eyes in an off-white, never a pure white, then the iris, the pupil and the line of the upper eyelid. Build the hair and the beard from a dark base. Paint the lacquered surfaces smoothly and in thin coats, ideally sprayed, because brush strokes would stand out on the gloss; give them depth with a dark glaze into the edges and a fine lightening of the surfaces, and only then with a gloss varnish at the very end. Leave the silk cords matte by contrast and paint them strand by strand, because the contrast of matte and gloss is half the result on this subject. The metal elements can be done with metallic paint over a smooth darker base or with non-metallic metal. Pin and glue the finished bust to its base and display it under light from above and in front.
The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and putty are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
