This is a bust whose 1:10 scale matches the usual format for portrait work. It is not a figure for a diorama nor an accessory to an aircraft kit, but a separate object for a display case. The subject is set by the name: a French pilot of the First World War period.
The French air service of the First World War grew from a handful of reconnaissance machines into an arm of its own with combat squadrons and a pilot culture of its own. Flying was done in open cockpits, where it was freezing at altitude even in summer, and the equipment matched that: a leather helmet with ear flaps, goggles with a leather frame, a scarf and a coat with a fur lining. Pilots watched their personal appearance - an open collar, a neckerchief or a striking mustache belonged to the image of an airman as much as the machine itself. For a modeler this is a subject in which, alongside the skin, the texture of leather and textile plays the leading role.
The leather of the equipment and the skin each need a different approach. Build the skin in thin layers, gradually lighten the forehead, the nose and the cheekbones and deepen the shadow under the chin and around the eyes. The leather helmet, on the other hand, should be taken with a darker base and given volume with a dry brush along the edges and seams, so that the texture stands out. A gentle semi-gloss on the leather and matte skin will create a natural contrast; finish the lenses of the goggles with gloss varnish at the very end. Paint the fur lining with short strokes of unequal length; regularity would give it away.
