About product

1:10 German Tank Hunter WWII - a resin bust from Young Miniatures

A large-format portrait bust cast in modeling resin in 1:10 scale. Sculpturally it is a combination of a concentrated expression and broken-up field gear, which in the end means two different painting disciplines on one piece: smooth transitions of skin against textured fabrics and metal. The casting is supplied unpainted.

The casting and preparation before painting

The bust is divided into several castings so that undercut details can be molded; the head tends to be separate. Before you reach for paint, wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water and let them dry, as mold release agent from the mold is the most common cause of peeling paint. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, level the surfaces with a file and try the fit dry. They are bonded with super glue, and the seam is filled and sanded back wet. Then comes a thin primer, which unifies the surface and makes any unfinished places visible before the paint covers them.

The painting task

The face will swallow the most work. In a large scale one shade of skin is not enough: you need a mid tone, deepened shadows into the eye sockets, at the nasal folds and under the chin, and highlights on the raised surfaces, all layered with heavily thinned paint. Leave the eyes, the lips and the stubble until the end. The uniform, by contrast, is a task for a dry brush and glazes: matte canvas with the texture of the fabric, leather webbing with a fine sheen, metal buckles and clasps picked out with a metallic pigment. Take the cut and the make of the clothing as a guide for color and shadow, not as a theme to expound. Keep the weathering restrained: a dark wash into the seams and folds, dust only on the lower areas. Fit the bust to its base only once the painting is finished.

Who the bust is for

  • Figure painters who want to work on a portrait in a large scale
  • Modelers practicing the distinction between fabrics, leather and metal
  • Collectors of historical busts for a display case
  • More experienced modelers familiar with resin

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue and putty are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Wash the parts free of mold release agent, cut off the casting blocks, glue them, fill the seams, spray a primer and paint the bust completely, including the weathering and fitting it to a base.

Busts are commonly painted with a brush. You will use an airbrush mainly for the primer and the base tone of larger surfaces.

Mold release agent from the mold stays on the surface. Without washing, neither the paint nor the primer holds and in time they peel off.

The exact number of parts is not stated here. With busts of this format a division into the head, the torso and several small accessories is usual.
