About product

Young Miniatures 1:10 Roman Vexillarius

A collector's bust in 1:10 scale cast in resin. A vexillarius was the bearer of the unit standard in the Roman army, which in a sculpted rendering shows as richer gear around the head and shoulders. For a modeler the point is that this is a combination of smooth skin, metal and soft materials on a small area, that is, a rewarding painting task.

Preparing the casting

Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water so that the mold release agent disappears. Cut the casting blocks off with a sharp knife or a fine saw, run a scalpel along the mold parting lines and finish them wet, protecting your airways. Fill and sand the seams after gluing. The parts are bonded with cyanoacrylate super glue; cement for plastic has no effect on resin. Before painting apply a thin coat of primer, which will reveal even small sanding scratches.

Painting the skin, the bronze and the fabrics

Build the face in thinned layers from a mid flesh tone toward lighting on the forehead, the nose and the cheekbones and toward darker transitions in the eye sockets and under the jaw. Classical subjects will take a somewhat darker, more sunburnt skin, but that is an authorial choice. Paint the eyes at the end with the thinnest brush and preferably in two passes. Build the hair and the beard from a dark base with a dry brush for the strands. The metal parts of the gear typically have a warm tone on Roman subjects, that is, bronze and brass rather than cold steel; either use metallic paints or paint them optically from ocher and brown tones. Metal is always finished by the weathering, that is, a dark wash into the hollows, a hint of green or brown aging in the seams and polished edges in the places where the surface would be rubbed. The tunic and the straps, by contrast, need a matte surface and softer shading in the folds so that they do not look flat next to the metal. Fur, if the casting carries any, is painted with a dry brush over a dark base. Pin the finished bust to a base and display it at eye level.

Who the bust is for

  • Collectors of classical and historical portrait busts.
  • Figure painters who want to combine skin, metal and cloth on one piece.
  • Modelers practicing the painting of bronze and weathering.
  • More experienced builders used to working with resin.

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

He was the soldier who carried the standard in a Roman unit. In a sculpted rendering this shows as richer gear around the head and shoulders.

The bust shows the head and the chest area, and the extent of the accessories differs from piece to piece. Check the contents of the casting on the box.

Use warm metallic shades or replace them with ocher and brown tones. The weathering is what decides: a dark wash into the hollows and polished edges.

Cyanoacrylate super glue. Ordinary cement for plastic does not soften resin.
