About product

1:10 Soviet Tank Commander 1944 - a resin bust from Young Miniatures

A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures with a Soviet tank commander in 1944 as its subject. The casting is cleaned up, aligned and prepared for paint, and the rest of the work belongs to the painter, which is exactly what the whole result rests on. The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted.

The sculpting

A tank crew subject offers a combination that paints well: a soft quilted coverall, a leather or canvas tank helmet with padding and ear flaps, and with it a face that is fully visible thanks to the close-fitting headgear. The quilting and the raised padding hold the shadow by themselves, so a dry brush and a glaze will do most of the work.

Preparing the casting and painting

Wash the casting free of mold release agent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife and fill and sand the seams once the parts are aligned. Then comes a thin primer in several light coats.

Painting: deal with the eyes and the skin first. Give the skin a rather cooler base and add warmth only to the cheeks, the nose and the ears. Build the coverall matte, with a slight lightening on the edges of the folds and with restrained contrast, because a strongly over-lit coverall looks artificial. Set the helmet apart by sheen: leather has a deep, soft reflection, canvas stays matte. Underlay the metal buckles and clasps with a dark base and bring them out with metallic paint only afterwards. Keep the weathering within limits: dust and oil stains belong on the shoulders, the sleeves and the collar, not all over the face. Finally pin the bust to a base.

Who the bust is for

  • Figure painters interested in tank crew subjects
  • Collectors of portrait busts in 1:10 scale
  • Modelers who want to practice painting leather and quilted fabrics
  • Exhibitors looking for a dominant piece on its own

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue, brushes and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

By sheen. Finish the leather with a satin to semi-gloss varnish and leave the cloth completely matte. The difference in the reflection of light reads better than a difference in color.

Not necessarily. An airbrush is useful for the primer and the base coats, but the face, the eyes and most of the detail are painted with a brush anyway.

If you definitely need a base, add one separately. Check the contents of the package on the box.
