About product

Young Miniatures 1:10 SS Fallschirmjäger Battalion 500 Drvar 1944

A collector's bust in 1:10 scale cast in resin. The casting is aligned and glued in several parts, so the building takes a fraction of the time and all the rest of the work belongs to the painter. In a large scale every transition of tone is legible, which is exactly why busts are collected.

Preparing the casting

Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water so that the mold release agent disappears. Cut the casting blocks off with a sharp knife or a fine saw, run a scalpel along the mold parting lines and finish them with wet sandpaper, protecting your airways. Fill and sand the seams after gluing, especially where the helmet sits, so that they do not show up as a line in the painting. The parts are bonded with cyanoacrylate super glue.

Painting the face and the camouflage pattern

After a thin coat of primer, build the skin in thinned layers: a mid tone, lighting on the forehead, the nose and the cheekbones, darker transitions in the eye sockets and under the jaw. Under the rim of the helmet it pays to deepen the shadow, or the face will lose its depth. Paint the eyes only once the skin is finished, with the thinnest brush and preferably in two passes; build the hair from a dark base and pick the strands out with a dry brush.

The jump smock with its camouflage pattern is the most demanding part of the whole bust. Work in layers: the base tone of the cloth, the large blotches, the smaller blotches and finally the finest stippling, with the pattern following the folds and the lie of the cloth, or it will look like a decal stuck on. Once it is finished, calm the whole down with a thinned glaze that unifies the sharp transitions. The helmet, by contrast, is a large smooth area; it wants a matte base, lighting on the crown and darkening under the rim, and if it carries a cover, paint that only once the shell is finished. Build the straps and the webbing darker with lighter edges, and the metal buckles are finished by a wash into the hollows and polished edges. The weathering should be weak, only dust in the folds and on the lower edges. Pin the finished bust to a base and display it at eye level.

Who the bust is for

  • Collectors of portrait busts from the period of the Second World War.
  • Figure painters who want to master a camouflage pattern in a large scale.
  • Modelers focused on painting a face under the rim of a helmet.
  • More experienced builders used to working with resin.

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

In layers: the base tone of the cloth, the large blotches, the smaller blotches and finally the stippling. The pattern has to follow the folds, otherwise it looks like a decal.

It is not. It is supplied as a resin casting to assemble and paint.

Cyanoacrylate super glue. Cement for plastic does not soften resin and the joint would not hold.

With busts in this scale the division is usually at the head, the torso and the helmet. Check the exact number of parts on the box.
