About product

1:10 U-Boat Crew WWII - a resin bust from Young Miniatures

A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures with a member of a submarine crew of the Second World War as its subject. The bust is not built like a classic kit: the casting is cleaned up, aligned and prepared for paint, and the painting then decides the result. It is supplied unassembled and unpainted and is intended for advanced modelers and figure painters.

The sculpting

A naval crew subject is built on the contrast between the face and coarse fabrics. The expression, the stubble and the drawn-out hair are modeled, and on the clothing there is coarse knitwear, heavy seams and the soft folds of outerwear. The 1:10 scale means that even fine transitions of shade tell on the face, which would be lost on a smaller figure, and that every surface has to be set apart by texture as well as by sheen.

Preparing the casting and painting

Wash the casting free of the remains of mold release agent first, otherwise the primer will not hold. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw or a knife, and never break them. Fill the parting seams, usually where the head or the shoulders sit, and sand them smooth, because a seam left under the paint will stand out after spraying. Then comes a thin primer, ideally in a shade that will support the later tone of the skin.

Painting: build the skin from a mid layer toward the shadows and highlights, give the cheeks and the nose a warmer tone and the stubble a cool cast. Paint the eyes first, while the head is accessible from all sides. Pick the hair and the beard out with glazes and a dry brush. Knitwear, leather and canvas differ mainly in sheen, and matte cloth against the deeper sheen of leather does half the work. At the end add restrained weathering on the collar and the shoulders and pin the finished bust to a base.

Who the bust is for

  • Figure painters who want to practice painting skin in a large scale
  • Collectors of portrait busts on naval subjects
  • Modelers moving from vehicles to figures
  • Exhibitors looking for a dominant piece for a display case

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Paints, glue, brushes and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Rather not. A resin casting calls for washing, cutting off the casting blocks and filling the seams, and above all for very careful painting of the face. It is work for an advanced figure painter.

Super glue, that is, cyanoacrylate. Cement for plastic does not dissolve resin and the joint would not hold.

The scale is 1:10 and that is your guide. Check the exact height in millimeters on the box.

Acrylics for figures are proven for the base layers and oil paints for soft transitions and shadows. What matters is a thin coat and gradual layering, not one covering coat.
