About product

Young Miniatures 1:10 US Navy SEAL Vietnam

A resin portrait bust in 1:10 scale from Young Miniatures. The casting is unpainted and unassembled. The building is short and the main work only begins with the primer, because with figure subjects it is the painting that decides the result, not the assembly.

The sculpting and the painting task

A subject of an American soldier of the Vietnam period puts a face in a tropical climate in the foreground. That is specific in terms of color: the skin has a higher share of sheen, a reflection of sweat appears on the forehead and above the lips, the tan is uneven and the contrast between the lit and the shaded part of the face is sharper than on European subjects. The field jacket and cap, by contrast, are matte and soaked, with darker places in the folds. If the casting carries a broken-up pattern on the clothing, painting it is the most demanding part of the bust: the pattern has to submit to the folds, otherwise it looks like a print on flat paper. The metal and plastic parts of the gear serve as contrasting points that give the portrait depth.

Preparation and painting tips

Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water and let it dry. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, fill the parting seams and sand them with fine paper, ideally wet and with your airways protected. Make the joints with super glue. Apply a thin primer in two or three misting passes. Build the skin from the mid value of the tone toward the highlights and shadows in many thinned layers; you will achieve the damp look by giving the matte skin a spot coat of gloss varnish at the end, only on the forehead, the nose and above the upper lip. Paint the eyes as the first step of the face. Create the hair and the stubble with a glaze and a dry brush. Unify the cloth with a base tone first and only then apply any pattern, always with regard to the shape of the fold. Work from the darker areas to the lighter ones. Weather the gear sparingly and pin the bust to a base only at the very end.

FAQ

Unify the whole bust with a matte varnish and bring the sheen back only in spots with a gloss varnish on the forehead, the bridge of the nose and above the upper lip. An overall sheen looks unnatural.

Draw the pattern only onto a finished base tone and always bend it along the fold of the cloth. Blotches on a raised surface should be larger and lighter than those in the depth of a fold.

As a rule not. The parting seams of the casting have to be filled and sanded, otherwise the line will stay visible even under the paint.
