About product

Young Miniatures 1:10 US Soldier Ardennes 1944

A collector's portrait bust in 1:10 scale cast in resin. The building is short, as the casting is aligned and glued in several parts, and the value of the piece only comes about under the brush. A winter subject is rewarding precisely because cold skin, coarse woolen cloth and dirtied metal all stand side by side in it.

Preparing the casting

Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water and rid it of the mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a sharp knife or a saw, run a scalpel along the mold parting lines and finish them with wet sandpaper, protecting your airways. Fill and sand the seams after gluing so that no line is left in the painting. The parts are bonded with cyanoacrylate super glue, as cement for plastic has no effect on resin.

Painting the face and the winter materials

After a thin coat of primer, build the skin in thinned layers. A winter subject will take a cooler treatment: keep the lighting cooler and add a fine flush to the nose, the ears and the cheekbones. The darker transitions belong in the eye sockets, under the nose and under the jaw, and it pays to deepen the shadow under the headgear so that the face gains depth. A hint of stubble is made with a very thinned gray-blue glaze over the chin. Paint the eyes last with the thinnest brush.

Woolen fabrics, that is, the coat, the scarf or the knitted cap, need a matte surface and coarser, less smooth transitions than a plain uniform; a dry brush works well here, because it brings out the texture of the weave. The steel helmet is the largest continuous area, and a matte olive base wants fine lighting on the crown and darkening under the rim. Build the straps and the webbing from a darker base with lighter edges, and the metal buckles are finished by a wash and polished edges. Winter weathering means mainly damp and mud on the lower edges and light pigments in the folds, whereas an overall whitening tends to spoil a bust. Pin the finished piece to a base.

Who the bust is for

  • Collectors of busts from the period of the Second World War.
  • Figure painters who want to practice woolen fabrics and their texture.
  • Modelers focused on a cool treatment of skin.
  • More experienced builders used to working with resin.

The bust is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

A matte surface and coarser, less smooth transitions. A dry brush over a darker base brings out the texture of the weave well.

Not as an overall layer. Damp and mud on the lower edges and light pigments only in the folds look more convincing.

Cyanoacrylate super glue. Cement for plastic does not soften resin.

It is not. It is supplied as a resin casting to assemble and paint.
