Niña was one of the three ships with which Christopher Columbus sailed west across the Atlantic in 1492. She was a caravel, that is a smaller, handy vessel of the kind that proved itself on voyages of discovery. The ship officially bore the name Santa Clara and got the nickname Niña after her owner. Originally she had a lateen, that is a triangular, rig, which was changed in the Canary Islands before the ocean crossing to a square rig, more advantageous when sailing with a steady wind astern. After the flagship Santa Maria ran aground, it was on Niña that Columbus returned to Spain.
The basis is a plastic kit in 1:100 scale. The parts are held on sprues, so before the build cut them off, clean up the mating surfaces and fit the main assemblies dry. For the build, have nippers, a sharp blade, a file, sandpaper, tweezers and cement for plastic ready.
With a sailing ship it pays to keep to the order: finish and paint the hull and the deck first, then build the masts and the yards, and the rigging comes last of all. Tension the fine thread evenly so that the masts do not go out of line, and secure the knots with a drop of cyanoacrylate glue. The wood of the hull comes out best when you play the base tone out with several near shades along the planks and bring out the seams with a dark wash. Stand the finished model on a base and protect it from dust, because rigging is difficult to clean.
The set is for modelers who build historical sailing ships and do not mind fine work with rigging. Paints, glue, thread and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
