About product

LACI 1:144 Convair 990 - extended landing flaps

A resin wing conversion for a Convair 990 model in 1:144 scale. It replaces the smooth trailing edge from the kit with the devices in the fully extended position, which makes the model look as if it had been caught on approach to landing. It is not a kit of an airplane but an accessory intended for a plastic model.

The real subject

The Convair 990 was the development continuation of the 880 type: it received a lengthened fuselage and more powerful engines and was designed as an exceptionally fast airliner for long routes. Its unmistakable identifying mark became the aerodynamic fairings on the trailing edge of the wing, which improved the airflow at high speeds and gave the aircraft a profile no other airliner had. The 990 did not succeed commercially either and stayed at a small series. For a modeler it is therefore a rare subject, and every extra detail - including the extended devices - pays off on a finished model.

Building and painting tips

First wash the castings in lukewarm water with detergent because of mold release agent. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine-toothed saw, level the mating surfaces on abrasive paper on a flat board and sand with breathing protection, best of all wet. Part of the kit wing is cut away, so mark the cut first and try the part dry repeatedly. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue; the gel version gives more time for accurate alignment. Once it has cured, apply a primer and check the transitions between plastic and resin. Airliners of this period often carried glossy metal surfaces - the smoothness of the base is therefore more important than with matte finishes, and the metallic paint should be applied at the end of the build, because it is harder to mask and to overspray.

Who the set is for

  • builders of civil aircraft in 1:144 scale
  • collectors of the rarer American jet airliner types
  • modelers who want a model in landing configuration
  • more experienced builders used to resin and cuts into plastic

This is an accessory set, not a stand-alone model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a resin conversion of the wing; a Convair 990 kit in 1:144 scale has to be bought separately.

Cyanoacrylate glue. Cement for plastic does not dissolve resin.

Wet sanding binds the dust, which must not be breathed in. Besides protecting your airways it also keeps the surface clean.

Yes, the trailing section of the wing is cut away and replaced. Work in small steps and keep trying the part dry.
