LACI 1:144 MD-90 - landing configuration

A resin accessory set in 1:144 scale from LACI. It is aimed at the landing configuration of the McDonnell Douglas MD-90, that is at the wing with the high-lift devices extended. It is not a kit of an airplane - the parts replace the corresponding sections of a plastic model you already have under way. It is a more extensive conversion than a plain flap set, so count on a longer job.

The real subject

The MD-90 is the last development of the long line that began with the DC-9. Compared with the MD-80 it received a longer fuselage and new turbofan engines with a higher bypass ratio that are noticeably quieter; the arrangement with the powerplants at the rear of the fuselage and a T-tail stayed, however. In modeling practice the MD-90 is rewarding precisely because the long slender fuselage looks splendid in the landing attitude with the devices extended, which a kit out of the box as a rule does not offer.

Usage tips

• Wash the castings in lukewarm water with detergent to take the mold release agent off. Without that the paint will not grip.
• Cut the casting blocks off with a saw and never break them; sand wet and with breathing protection.
• Mark the cut into the wing and try the fit of the parts dry several times.
• Glue with cyanoacrylate glue, because the gel version gives time to set the angle of extension symmetrically on both wing halves.
• Fill the joints and go over them with filler primer before painting, otherwise the transition will show on the smooth surface.
