A set of pre-cut masks in kabuki tape, that is, Japanese washi paper tape, in 1:48 scale. It is made for models of the Lockheed F-104 Starfighter in the F-104A, F-104C and F-104G versions. With this brand the designation BASIC is a statement about the extent of the set, not about its quality: BASIC is the smallest of the levels offered and covers the basic painting jobs, while the ADVANCED and EXPERT levels add further areas and parts. Please check the exact contents of the particular set against the box and the enclosed instructions.
Washi paper tape has a weak but reliable adhesive, adapts well to slightly curved surfaces and leaves no sticky film on the finish when lifted. At the same time it is thin enough for the sprayed edge to be sharp and strong enough not to tear into pieces when removed. The cut is a kiss cut, so the pieces stay on the carrier film and are lifted off one by one with tweezers.
The Starfighter was a single-engine supersonic aircraft with a very thin and short trapezoidal wing and a high wing loading. The F-104A version was created as a fighter for the US Air Force, the F-104C served as a fighter-bomber as well and the later F-104G was a multirole variant for European users. The cockpit has a slender, multi-part canopy with thin frames, and masking it by hand is one of the most tiresome jobs in 1:48 scale.
The package contains masks only. The model, paints and glue are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
