The Jimmy was the sister model of the Chevrolet Blazer and came from the same hardware: the ladder-frame chassis of the utility pickups, a simple axle layout and generous interior space. The characteristic element of the first generation is the removable rear section of the roof, thanks to which a closed vehicle became a practically open off-roader. The combination of a stiff frame, simple maintenance and a large engine bay made the Jimmy a popular machine both for work and for leisure, and to this day it is among the American off-road vehicles sought after by collectors.
With an off-road vehicle it pays to build the frame and the axles first and to paint them right away, because once the body is fitted you will hardly get to them. Sand the body and spray a filler primer, and deal with two-tone finishes with a mask once the lighter shade has dried. The wheels and the wheel wells deserve sparing weathering: a fine application of pigment or a lighter wash will suggest dust, but do not overdo it, or the model will look more muddy than used. Build the interior separately; on a vehicle with a removable roof a lot of it is visible.
