About product

Instrument panel for the early blocks of the P-40N in 1:72 scale

The set from Yahu Models is a finished part for the cockpit, not a kit. The panel has raised relief and color printing from the factory and in the model it replaces the plastic part, or is glued onto the thinned plastic.

Let us be specific about the size: in 1:72 scale the instrument panel of a fighter is a tiny part roughly the size of the nail on your little finger. That is exactly why a finished panel makes most sense here. Painting the individual dial faces at this size with a brush is work for a very steady hand, and a decal seats worse on a small surface. At the same time, reckon with the fact that the part can only be handled with tweezers and that you will not see the fine details of the printing with the naked eye, although on the model they do their job.

The real subject

The Curtiss P-40N was the last large production version of the P-40 fighter and in British and Allied nomenclature was designated Kittyhawk Mk.IV. The early N-1 and N-5 blocks arose as a lightened variant aimed at rate of climb and differed from the later series in equipment and in details of the cockpit. Yahu Models therefore keeps the panels for the early, middle and late P-40N blocks apart, so that you can choose exactly the one that matches your kit.

Setting it into the cockpit

Thin or remove the plastic panel from the kit, so that the depth of the cockpit is not reduced. Work with tweezers and over a mat from which you will find the part should you drop it. It is glued in spots with cyanoacrylate or with a flexible glue for photo-etched parts; dose the glue with a pin, so that it does not run over the printing. Do not spray matte varnish over the panel.

Who the set is for

  • For builders of early P-40Ns in 1:72 scale.
  • For modelers who do not want to paint dials on a surface the size of a fingernail.
  • For builds with the canopy slid back.
  • For collectors who build the whole range of P-40 versions and want to tell them apart inside the cockpit as well.

FAQ

It is genuinely tiny, roughly like the nail on your little finger, and it can only be handled with tweezers. But that is exactly why it is worth it: hand-painted dials at this size tend to be inaccurate.

For the early N-1 and N-5 blocks. The brand keeps separate panels for the middle and late blocks as well, because the cockpits differed between series.

The British and Allied designation of the P-40N version. It is the same aircraft under a different name, not a different subject.
