1:12 Diviner is a bust with a diviner motif, on which you can play nicely with the fabric, the hood and mysterious lighting.

The English name refers to a figure who reads signs and foretells the future. Such a theme usually brings flowing clothing, a covered head and plenty of shadowed areas with it, which is an entirely different exercise for the painter than a bare face: what decides is the work with the fabric and with the depth under the hood.
The folds of clothing live off the difference between the crest of a fold and the bottom of a hollow. A proven procedure starts from the mid-tone: first the base is laid down, then the hollows are gradually darkened with glazes and finally the crests are lightened. Mix every glaze very thin and let it dry before the next one comes; only that way do the transitions read as smooth and the fabric does not acquire hard edges.
A face hidden in a hood is striking but treacherous. Darken it too much and it disappears; too little and the mystery is lost. A sensible compromise is to leave the face noticeably darker than the surroundings and to bring a single highlight back into it, typically a glint in the eye or a narrow strip on the nose. A cool shade of shadow against warm surroundings will strengthen that impression of depth further.
Lighting from the side will underline the texture of the fabric more than light falling straight from the front.
