About product

North American T-28B Trojan in 1:144 scale from Miniwing

The kit captures the North American T-28B, that is, the naval version of the Trojan trainer with a markedly more powerful powerplant. In 1:144 scale it is a small model, which suits a collection of school machines and sits well beside other versions of the same type.

The real subject

The Trojan came about at the end of the 1940s as a modern trainer of all-metal construction, with a low wing and retractable nose gear. The T-28B version was developed for naval training and, compared with the first production version, was given a substantially more powerful engine: a nine-cylinder Wright R-1820 Cyclone radial with an output of over 1400 horsepower and a three-blade propeller. That turned a trainer into a fairly fast aircraft, which prepared pupils for operating high-performance hardware. Unlike the version that followed it, intended for carrier landing training, the T-28B had no arrestor hook. It is precisely by the propeller and the engine cowling that the version can be recognized on a model too.

Building and painting tips

The most delicate thing is the radial cowling with its propeller, so leave it to the end of the build. Sand the joints of the fuselage and the wing only enough for them to disappear, and restore any engraving wiped away with a fine needle. Before closing the fuselage up, paint whatever will be visible through the canopy once assembled. Spray the paint well thinned in several thin coats. Naval trainers tend to be conspicuously marked, so the decals will decide the result most: apply them on a gloss varnish, move them with a damp brush, draw them down with a decal softener and finally unify the surface with a varnish of a suitable degree of sheen.

Who the model is for

  • For collectors of naval training hardware
  • For modelers who build variants of one type side by side
  • For anyone interested in the differences between the versions of the Trojan family
  • For a display case where there is little room and a small scale comes in useful

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

Mainly in the powerplant. The T-28B has a nine-cylinder R-1820 radial engine with an output of over 1400 horsepower and a three-blade propeller, while the T-28A had a weaker seven-cylinder R-1300 and a two-blade propeller.

It did not. The hook came only with the version that followed, intended for training landings on the deck of an aircraft carrier.

The cowling of the radial engine and the propeller, which are very small in 1:144 scale. We recommend gluing them on only after the fuselage has been painted.

Check the number of parts and the material on the packaging of the kit.
