Ivy is a rewarding plant for diorama builders. It grows where it is damp and shady, it clings to walls, fences and trunks, and above all it can turn an ordinary wall into a place with a history in no time. This accessory from the Model Scene brand is prepared for 1:45, 1:48 and 1:56 scale, that is for the usual sizes of aircraft as well as ground equipment.
It looks best on the masonry of abandoned buildings, on ruins, boundary walls, at the feet of trees and on fences. It is precisely climbing greenery that gives a scene age: a new building does not get overgrown with ivy, whereas a house that has stood for decades does. It also works well as a way to cover a less successful joint or an empty area where detail is missing.
Try the placement dry first and look at the scene from the height of a viewer's eye. Ivy does not grow evenly over a whole area but in strips and clusters that start from below and spread upwards, so irregularity is desirable here. A drop of PVA glue is enough to fix it, and on vertical surfaces a gel super glue that does not run works well. Complete the lower part of the growth with small leaf litter at the foot of the wall, so that the transition does not look cut off. The shade can be unified with a very light overspray from a distance; darker green in shade and lighter on the sunlit side gives the growth depth.
The accessory is supplied as scenic vegetation to be set into your own base. Glue, water surface material and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
