A plastic kit of the Aviation Traders ATL.98 Carvair in 1:144 scale - a piston airliner converted into a ferry for carrying cars.
Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the idiosyncratic airliner Aviation Traders ATL.98 Carvair in 1:144 scale from Roden. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The kit captures the characteristic bulbous nose with its swing doors and the raised flight deck; for the exact contents of the box and the range of decals, go by the enclosed instructions.
The Carvair was created by converting the four-engined piston airliner Douglas DC-4. Aviation Traders built a capacious fuselage into it with a swing nose and the crew cabin set above the cargo hold, so that cars and passengers could be loaded into the aircraft at the same time. The prototype first flew at the beginning of the 1960s and Carvairs served above all as air ferries for carrying cars across the sea and for outsize loads.
The bulky nose is the visual highlight - so fill the fuselage seams carefully and sand them smooth. Mask the glazing of the high-set cabin before spraying. Polished metal surfaces are created with metallic paint applied over a smooth base, and only at the end of the build. Lay down a gloss varnish under the airline decals so that they do not silver; set the matte and gloss areas apart with the final overcoat.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
