A masking set for a 1:144 model of the B-58A bomber. The parts are machine die-cut from kabuki tape and they are there to keep the paint edge sharp and the glazing clean while spraying. Unlike most sets from the same manufacturer, this one carries neither BASIC nor EXPERT in its name, because it comes in a single coverage. The name instead lists several kits the cut is meant for, which is a fairly wide reach, and working out which of them you are building is worth the effort before you buy. The cut of the masks covers the Academy 4442 and 12619, Wolfpack WP14001, Hobbycraft HC1260 and HC1261 kits.
The Convair B-58A Hustler was a supersonic bomber with a delta wing and four engines in separate nacelles slung under the wing. The fuselage is slender, the cockpit narrow and the crew sat in tandem one behind the other. The combination of the polished metal finish the aircraft often wore and large flat areas makes this type a subject where every imperfect paint transition shows at once. In 1:144 scale the model is tiny and the individual windows are hard to mask by hand.
Degrease the surface before masking and let the paint cure. Lift the parts with tweezers, seat them in place and press them down around the edge with a blunt tool. Spray in thin coats, and with polished metal shades prefer several light passes to one heavy one. Remove the mask soon after it has dried, at a shallow angle. If a bleed does appear under the edge, fix it with a pointed brush before the varnish goes on, not after.
The masks are a painting aid. The kit and the paints are not included in the package.
