The KJ-500 is a Chinese airborne early warning and control aircraft built on the basis of the four-engined turboprop transport of the Y-9 series. Its identifying feature is the fixed disc-shaped radome carried above the fuselage — unlike older solutions, the antenna does not rotate, because the beam is steered electronically. The machine serves as an airborne command and surveillance station: it searches for airborne targets over a large area and passes the information on to other units. A large airframe with long range and high endurance is typical of this role, as it is on comparable aircraft of other countries.
In 1:144 scale clean work on the seams is the key — on a small model unsanded joints show more than any added detail. Glue with thin cement for plastic, which soaks into the seam by capillary action. Lay down a primer before painting and use an airbrush on the large unbroken surfaces of the fuselage; brush strokes would stand out on a smooth surface. Go over the surface with a gloss clear coat before the decals, so that no silvered edges form under them, and even the surface out at the end with a matte or satin clear coat. Glue the radome on only once the fuselage has been painted; it is easier to mask that way.
