The second half of the edition devoted to the tanker Victors of No. 55 Squadron: three further machines with nose art, at a reduction of 1:144.
Responsibility details are not available.
The British tankers that parked at the Muharraq airfield in 1990 were given nose art and names within a few weeks. This sheet follows on from the first half of the edition and adds a further three. XM715 carries a pair of names at once, Teasin Tina and the nickname Meldrew, along with thirty-eight marked missions. XM717 appears as Lucky Lou with forty-two and XL164 as Saucy Sal with forty-one.
The custom of painting names and figures on fuselages had been unthinkable in the Royal Air Force for decades and returned precisely with this deployment. A peculiar mixture came about: a forty-year-old airframe with a nuclear pedigree, modern refueling equipment and artwork that would have suited a bomber from 1944. Machine XM715 has moreover survived and is among the exhibits kept in running condition on the ground.
Refueling in the air has an aesthetic of its own that a model is able to suggest: the hose extended from the underwing pods, the basket at its end and the machines lined up in train behind it. Anyone building the whole scene will appreciate that at this reduction a tanker can be built together with its escort without having to rearrange the whole display case.
The artwork is placed below the cockpit windows on a heavily curved area, so decal softener cannot be avoided. It is applied only after the artwork is exactly seated, otherwise the film creases before you can line it up, and the rows of tiny mission marks twist along with it.
The set suits kits of the tanker version in 1:144 size and consists of a single printed sheet. Paints and clear coat do not belong with it and modelers usually choose them according to their own habit.
