A kit of the Romanian fighter IAR-80 in the small scale of 1:144. The 1:144 format suits above all collectors who want a whole group of types together and have no room for it in larger scales. The IAR-80 is at the same time among the types which appear on offer only rarely, so it is a welcome addition to a collection.
The IAR-80 was a single-seat fighter of Romanian design and Romanian manufacture which took off at the close of the nineteen-thirties and reached the units at the beginning of the nineteen-forties. It built on experience with the licensed production of foreign types and brought it together into an all-metal low-wing monoplane with retractable landing gear. The Romanian Air Force operated it on the Eastern Front and later also in the defense of its own territory, where its pilots met the American bomber formations heading for the oil fields near Ploiesti. In later years a version adapted for diving attacks on ground targets came into being too. The numbers built stayed small against those of the main belligerents, but that makes the type all the more interesting.
In 1:144 scale the cleanness of the surface decides more than anything else; any unevenness is visible at once after spraying. Sand the seams carefully, therefore, and bring the surface together with a primer. Romanian schemes with their striking insignia on the wings and the fuselage are rewarding in color, but in a scale this small it pays to ease off on the saturation and to leave out exaggerated emphasis of the panel lines. A small model also dries more quickly, so shorter pauses between layers are enough.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
