A set of parts in thin photo-etched metal sheet in 1:144 scale, intended to improve the plastic kit of the Japanese fighter Nakajima Ki-43-I. It is neither a kit nor a finished model: it is an aftermarket accessory cut for one specific kit, the Platz one. Before you buy, please check that you have the corresponding base model.
In 1:144 a whole aircraft is only a few centimeters long and injection-molded plastic cannot hold the true thickness of thin components. Photo-etch works with sheet a fraction of that thickness, so parts that have a sharp edge on the real thing have one on the model as well. With sets of this kind it is usually a matter of the equipment of the cockpit, small surfaces on the fuselage and the wing and parts of the landing gear. Check the exact contents of the package with the manufacturer; it cannot be deduced from the name.
The Nakajima Ki-43 was a single-engine fighter with a radial engine and retractable landing gear, built around low weight and agility. The Ki-43-I version is the earliest production form of the range; compared with the later versions it had a weaker powerplant and lighter armament. It is a type of the Second World War period whose lightweight structure came at the cost of durability.
Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel against a hard surface and never break them out by twisting. A bending tool or two blades held together is good for folds. They are glued with cyanoacrylate applied with the tip of a wire; cement for plastic will not join metal. Degrease the etch before painting and spray it with primer, otherwise the paint cracks and peels on the smooth metal. Paint thinly: a heavy coat fills exactly the fine detail you are buying the set for.
