A set of 36 PAG-14 concrete airfield panels in 1:144 scale from the Ukrainian brand Armory. This is not an aircraft kit but a diorama accessory from which the airfield surface under the model is laid out. In 1:144 scale it is a practical solution, because the regular grid of joints gives the surface the right rhythm, which painting on a smooth base cannot imitate. Check the material and the size of a single panel on the box.
The PAG-14 is a type of precast reinforced concrete panel from which Soviet practice laid runways, taxiways and parking areas. The panels were placed next to one another in a regular grid, so the resulting surface has a conspicuous network of joints that stands out at once in photographs of Soviet and later Russian airfields. The advantage of this construction was that a runway could be laid quickly and a damaged panel replaced without rebuilding the whole surface.
Glue the panels onto a flat, hard base so the surface does not wave anywhere. Once they are glued, go over the joints between the panels with a darker wash; it brings out the grid. Do not paint the concrete in a single gray shade: break the base coat into several close tones, differentiate the individual panels, and apply the tire marks and oil stains only at the end, ideally with pigment. Sand the edges of the panels down slightly so they are not as sharp as if they had been cut.
This is a diorama accessory, not a kit. Paints, glue and a base are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
