Space Shuttle - kabuki masks 1:144 (New Ware)

This is NOT a model but a set of self-adhesive masks from New Ware for the plastic kit of the American Space Shuttle orbiter in 1:144 scale. The masks are cut from Japanese washi (kabuki) masking paper, which gives a sharp paint edge, and serve for spraying the canopy glazing and the broken-up black and white surface of the orbiter.

The real subject

The Space Shuttle was an American reusable orbiter that launched as a rocket and landed as a glider. It flew into space for three decades, carrying crews and cargo into orbit. Its surface is made up of an extensive system of thermal protection tiles, whose sharp transitions between black and white areas are among the most demanding parts of building the model.
