About product

1:144 US Staff car — a resin set from the manufacturer Brengun

This small model of an American staff car in 1:144 scale is cast in resin, not injection-molded in plastic. In this scale the vehicle is only a few centimeters long, so the build consists above all in carefully cutting off the casting block, cleaning it up and painting it. It is a typical accessory for aircraft models in 1:144 scale — on an apron, by a hangar or on an access road it gives a scene scale and a story. Resin castings tend to have sharper and finer detail than injection-molded plastic, but they are more brittle and call for a different gluing procedure.

The real subject

The staff cars of the US Army during the Second World War were based on production civilian passenger cars that the Army and the Navy bought for transporting officers and staff personnel. The vehicles drove between headquarters, airfields, ports and training grounds, that is exactly in the setting modelers build around aircraft. The finish tended to be in an overall olive drab shade with white tactical markings and a star; cars in their original civilian paint, taken over in the first months of the war, could also be met with.

Building and painting tips

First wash the parts in lukewarm soapy water, so that mold release residue is removed from the surface — otherwise the paint holds badly. Cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw or a sharp scalpel and level the area with abrasive paper; when sanding resin, protect your airways and work in a ventilated space. It is glued with cyanoacrylate, as ordinary cement for plastic has no effect on resin. Before painting, apply a thin layer of primer, cover with an airbrush and finish details such as the glass, the lights and the markings with a brush.

Who the model is for

  • Modelers who build airfields and rear-area scenes in 1:144 scale
  • Collectors of hardware in small scales, where a collection fits into a single display case
  • Diorama builders looking for a vehicle to add a size comparison
  • More experienced modelers used to working with resin and cyanoacrylate

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a resin casting. The parts are cut off the casting block and glued with cyanoacrylate; ordinary cement for plastic does not work here.

Working with resin is more demanding than with plastic — a saw or a scalpel, abrasive paper and care in cleaning up are needed. For a complete beginner it is not the ideal first set.

Above all as an accessory for scenes and dioramas in 1:144 scale where models of aircraft stand. A vehicle gives a scene scale and comes across more credibly than an empty area.

They are not. Paints, glue and any base have to be obtained separately.
