A white plastic sheet 1.5 mm thick for scratch building. It will serve for bulkheads, floors and bases as well as for repairs and for the additions a kit does not contain.

Plastic sheet is the basic raw material from which a modeler makes what is missing in a kit. One sheet yields bulkheads and floors for an interior, fillers and blanking plates, crates and boxes for a diorama and a flat base under a finished model. It also comes in handy for repairs, when a broken or missing part has to be replaced. The thickness of this sheet is 1.5 mm, which is firm enough for load-bearing parts and bases while it is still easy to work with ordinary modeling tools.
A white surface is easy to read while you work. A line drawn in pencil shows up well on it, and so do scratches and unevenness left by sanding, so you can tell when a surface is really finished. A white base also does not dull the shade under a thin coat of paint the way a dark material does.
A straight cut is made with a scribing knife along a ruler: score it several times and then snap the sheet over an edge. Then sand the edge smooth. Holes are drilled slowly and with light pressure so that the material does not tear. To join it, use a glue suitable for the given type of plastic, according to the manufacturer's instructions. Before painting, wash and degrease the surface and let it dry properly. When building from sheet it pays to trace the shape onto paper first, hold it against the finished model and only then cut according to the proven template.
