About product

Irmgard — American Gustav in Tunisia, decals 1:48

A decal sheet in 1:48 scale devoted to a single particular aircraft: the captured Messerschmitt Me 109G-2 with the works number 10605, which in Tunisia was given American markings and the name Irmgard. Captured machines are a rewarding theme among modelers, because they combine an original camouflage with foreign national insignia. There is no model in the package; the decals are applied to a finished kit of the matching version in 1:48 scale.

The real subject

The G series of the Bf 109 type, also commonly designated Me 109 in period and later material alike, brought the stronger Daimler-Benz DB 605 engine and with it the characteristic fairings over the guns in the nose. The G-2 version was the lighter, unpressurized variant from the early phase of production of the G series. Captured and re-flown machines were given conspicuous markings by their new users, so that their own anti-aircraft defense would not mistake them — it is exactly this combination that makes such aircraft a favorite modeling subject.

Application and tips

The base has to be smooth and glossy. Let a painted model dry through, go over it with gloss varnish and only then apply the decals — on a matte surface air is shut in under the film and the edges go silvery. Cut the motif out closely, soak it briefly in lukewarm water and let it rest a few seconds, until the film releases from the paper. Slide it onto the model, press the water out with a cotton bud from the middle outward and help the decal over engraved lines and rivets with softener. Do not touch a wrinkled film once softener has been laid on; it evens itself out. Then take the whole model back to matte or go over it with satin varnish, so that the glossy intermediate layer cannot be seen.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who enjoy captured machines and unusual combinations of markings
  • Builders of German fighters in 1:48 scale who want one particular documented aircraft
  • Anyone interested in events in the Mediterranean and North Africa
  • Collectors of decal sheets for the Bf 109 type

An accessory to a model. The kit and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. This is a decal sheet; you need your own model of the G-2 version in 1:48 scale.

The name names one particular aircraft. Please check the exact content of the sheet and the additional lettering on the package.

A glossy varnished surface will not let air stay under the decal film, so the edges do not whiten. Once the decals are on, the model is varnished matte or satin.

When a decal has to go over rivets, engraved lines or a curve. Lay it on with a brush and let it dry without any further interference.
