This set of stencils from MH models serves to apply German divisional insignia to large models of vehicles in 1:16 scale. It is not a decal. The insignia is created directly by sprayed paint, so it is part of the finish and leaves behind none of the glossy edge that a decal sometimes gives away. The first volume opens a range in which each volume brings a different selection of insignia.
You set the stencil carefully into the right position on the model, spray paint through it in two or three thin coats and lift it off once dry. Scale 1:16 works in favor of accuracy, because the insignia are large enough and easy to handle. Spray perpendicular to the surface and rather with a lighter coat. A heavy application draws paint under the edge of the stencil and the outline blurs. Before you start, plan where the insignia is to go on the model and check the position against period photographs. Division insignia appeared in various places on vehicles and were sometimes changed during a campaign.
It will be appreciated by modelers of the large scales who want their markings as matte and as weathered as the rest of the finish. It also suits builds where the insignia is to be partly covered by mud or damage. A sprayed insignia can be sanded, toned and weathered in exactly the same way as the surface around it.
