A standalone decal sheet from Eduard production intended for models of the Messerschmitt Bf 109 fighter in the F-2 version in 1:48 scale. It contains national insignia, that is, the large-area markings for the wings and the fuselage, which tend to be the weakest point of kit decals. The sheet is useful as a replacement for yellowed or cracked decals from older kits and as a complement to sheets with the individual markings of particular machines. Compare the specific make-up and the number of marking variants with the illustration on the packaging.
The Bf 109F, nicknamed Friedrich, was a development line of the German single-engine fighter with an aerodynamically cleaned-up airframe, rounded wing tips and no struts on the horizontal tail surface. The F-2 version was among the first machines of this line delivered in series and was armed with an engine-mounted cannon of a smaller caliber than later forms. The national insignia on this line appeared in several sizes and in forms with borders of differing width.
Large-area markings are the most demanding to apply, because every imperfection of the surface shows through them. Lay down gloss clear beforehand, therefore: on a matte surface an air gap forms under the film and the decal silvers. Cut the sheet close to the artwork so that as little carrier film as possible is left. Carry the marking onto a wet surface and fine-tune the position with a soft brush, not with your fingers. Press the excess water out from the center toward the edges with a cotton bud. On the leading edge of the wing and at the fillets, decal softener helps draw the film onto the shape. Seal everything with a matte or semi-gloss clear coat according to the surface of the model.
