The medium carrier changed beyond recognition over six years of production. The angular box of the first series gave way to a simplified hull of flat sheets, and variants with an anti-tank gun, with rocket launchers, with a searchlight and with a howitzer were added. What practically did not change, however, was the front steered axle and the wheels on it. A replacement set therefore serves regardless of which version the modeler has chosen, and it carries over even to a part-built job that one returns to after years.
The manufacturer carries this package under the name that the side of the tire bears: a road design with densely arranged grooves. At 1:16 the wheel grows to dimensions where the lettering stops being an engraving and becomes a legible relief. The rim has its cut-out holes open right through, the bead is sharp and the transition from rubber to metal holds a precise edge, shapes that an injection mold manages only with concessions. The tread moreover runs around without interruption, so the filing of the trace left by the parting line of the injection tool in the middle of the width of the wheel is dispensed with. On a large model it is a saving of time that anyone who has once tried this work on four wheels at once will appreciate.
The package is aimed at the Sd.Kfz. 251 kit from the Das Werk brand. Fit the wheel dry and check that it is at a right angle to the fender before you reach for the glue. When painting, separate the rim with masking tape and spray the rubber a dark gray with a hint of brown; a final misting with a thin layer of a dust shade from the top down will separate the wheel from the chassis and prevent the two from merging into one mass.
