The 1:16 scale is demanding on markings. Numbers and emblems are striking at this size, so it pays to use a sheet printed directly for it rather than an enlargement from a smaller scale. Check the extent of the sheet and the number of marking variants on the packaging.
Decals hold best on a smooth glossy base, so coat the area under the decal with gloss varnish and let it cure properly. Release the sheet in warm water, slide the decal into place and draw the excess water off. On rivets, edges and curved areas a softener will help, as it draws the decal down to the surface so that the carrier film is not visible. Once it is dry, unify the whole model with a matte or semi-matte varnish and only then go on with the patina and pigments.
