The Z-37 Cmelak is a Czechoslovak agricultural aircraft that flew over fields for decades, fertilizing and spraying. It is a simple and rugged machine with fixed landing gear, a chemical tank ahead of the cockpit and a high-set seat from which the pilot has a view forward and downward. The Z-37A version is one of the most widespread. The aircraft became such a natural part of the country landscape in Czechoslovakia that it also found its way onto the cinema screen, and with it the character of its pilot.
The set brings a figure of a pilot in 1:48 scale, that is in the scale matching the Z-37A model. A person around 175 cm tall measures roughly 3.5 centimeters in this scale, so the figure deserves careful painting while taking up no extra room in a display case. A figure beside the aircraft immediately reveals its size and gives the scene a story.
Wash and degrease the figure before painting and apply a base coat, otherwise the paint is easily rubbed off the smooth surface. Build the face and the hands up in thin coats from a darker tone toward a lighter one and leave shadow in the folds, otherwise the figure looks flat. Keep the clothing worn rather than colorful, which is in order for agricultural work. Finally, unify the figure with a matte varnish and glue it to the aircraft only once both parts are finished.
