About product

Set of three riveting wheels in a vinyl case (Excel)

A riveting wheel is a toothed wheel turning freely in a handle. Run across material it creates a row of perfectly regular impressions, something that pricking by hand with a needle cannot do. According to the designation this item is a set of three wheels supplied in a vinyl case, so the tools are kept together and protected, which matters with teeth, because a knocked tooth prints itself into every row of rivets that follows.

Positive rivets and how to get them

The direction of work decides the result. A pass over the face leaves impressions, that is negative riveting, which suits sheet with flush rivets, for example. If you turn thin material face down and run the wheel over the back, the teeth push the material through and a row of raised, positive rivets appears on the face. This is how riveting is made on thin plastic sheet, on aluminum foil and on self-adhesive film, from which the finished strip of rivets is lifted and applied to the model. A positive rivet cannot be pushed into the thick wall of a kit part; there the wheel makes impressions.

Keeping the line along a panel line

  • Stick tape along the intended line or lay a ruler against it and lead the wheel tight to the edge.
  • On curved surfaces use flexible tape so that the line follows the curve of the fuselage smoothly.
  • Go in one stroke with even pressure; a break and a fresh start show in a finished row.
  • Before the real cut, try the line on an offcut of the same material.
  • When you are done, run fine abrasive paper lightly over the row and level the burrs around the impressions.

What to watch out for

What pitches or diameters the individual wheels have is not given by the manufacturer in the designation. If you need a particular pitch for the scale you build in, check it on the box.

Who it is for

For modelers of aircraft and vehicles who restore riveting after sanding seams, and for those who would rather make strips of rivets themselves than buy finished photo-etched ones.

FAQ

The designation gives only that there are three pieces and a vinyl case. Check the pitches and diameters of the wheels on the box.

Turn thin material face down and run the wheel over the back. The teeth push the material through and a row of domed rivets appears on the face. Over the face, by contrast, impressions are what you get.

Use a guide. Stick tape along the line or lay a ruler against it, lead the wheel tight to the edge and go in one smooth stroke with even pressure.

If you build in several scales, yes. Rivets on a model in 1:72 and in 1:32 have a different pitch and one wheel will not cover both. Check the particular pitches in this set on the box beforehand, though.
