A sheet of waterslide decals from the Mark I brand. It is not a model and not a kit, but a set of national marking that you add to a finished, painted model yourself. The sheet is the second part of a series devoted to the roundels of British night fighter machines of the First World War; the first part comes out separately. Check the actual extent of the sheet and the number of individual markings on the box.
British aircraft of the First World War wore a circular roundel in the order blue, white, red. On machines deployed at night, however, the ordinary marking was modified: the white was darkened, subdued or left out altogether, so that the national insignia would not give the machine away so much in the light of searchlights and on clear nights. That gave rise to variants of roundels that differ strikingly from the daytime standard and that immediately reveal on a model that this is a machine of the home night defense.
In 1:144 scale the individual markings really are tiny and working with them calls for calm and good light. Prepare the surface with gloss varnish, because on a matte surface air gets caught under the film of the decal and a matte frame stays around the marking. Cut the decal out together with the backing, dip it in lukewarm water for a few seconds and move it with a moistened brush; use tweezers rather for handling the backing than the film itself, which at this scale easily folds over and sticks together. Settle the decal in place with a decal softener, so that it draws down onto the curvature and into the engraved lines. Once it has dried perfectly, overcoat the whole model with matte or satin varnish, which blends the edges of the film with the paint.
