About product

Mitsubishi A6M2b Zero Reisen landing gear bay masks in 1:48 scale

A set of Dead Design painting templates for the landing gear bays of the Japanese Mitsubishi A6M2b carrier fighter. These are not canopy masks and not a kit; the templates cover the openings of the bays, so that the finished interior is not fouled by the top coat of the airframe.

Why a bay is masked

On most aircraft the inside of a landing gear bay has a different shade from the outer camouflage. The order of the work is therefore set: first the bay interior is sprayed and finished, then the opening is covered, and only after that do the primer and the camouflage of the whole airframe come up. Without a mask, overspray gets into the bay from every direction and the finished interior has to be touched up laboriously with a brush, with a result that in a deeply recessed part almost always shows.

How to plan the work

A mask works only when the paint beneath it is dry; do not apply it to a fresh coat. Lay the template so that it lines up with the edge of the opening, as it is precisely that edge which decides whether the transition between bay and airframe will be crisp. Press the edges down with a toothpick, because there tend to be engraved details and unevenness around bays, where a mask has a tendency to lift.

Painting tips

Finish the bay interior, weathering included, before you close it under the mask. What you have done stays exactly as it is under the mask, and getting at it afterwards for a repair is difficult. Spray the top color perpendicular to the surface, not at an angle into the opening, so that it does not flow under the edge. Remove the mask once the camouflage has dried, but still before the landing gear legs are glued on; with the gear fitted, work inside a bay is much harder.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who paint bays separately and want to protect them.
  • Those who do not want to stuff a bay with cotton wool or sponge.
  • Builders of Japanese naval fighters in 1:48 scale.
  • Anyone who wants a crisp transition at the edge of the opening with no touching up.

FAQ

It covers the openings of the landing gear bays at the moment their interior is already painted, so that no overspray gets into them while the top camouflage is sprayed.

First the bay interior including the weathering, then let it dry, fit the mask and only after that spray the primer and the camouflage of the airframe.

Cotton wool holds unreliably and leaves a smeared transition at the edge of the opening. A die-cut mask lines up with the edge, so the transition is crisp.

Once the camouflage has dried and ideally still before the landing gear legs are glued on; work in an open bay is markedly easier.
