Responsibility details are not available.
A masking set from Dead Design for models of the Japanese Nakajima Ki-44 Shoki fighter in 1:72 scale. These are not parts for the model and not canopy masks, but pre-cut templates for the landing gear bays and their surroundings.
The inside of a landing gear bay tends to have a different shade from the outer surface of the airframe and on a model it is painted first. When the primer and the top color are then sprayed, atomized paint gets into an open bay even with careful handling of the airbrush. In 1:72 scale the whole bay is only a few millimeters across, so bleeds are wretched to repair. A mask follows the outline of the opening exactly, thanks to which the edge stays crisp and the interior keeps its own shade.
The proven procedure is simple: first spray the interior of the bays and let it dry through properly, then apply the masks and only after that go to the primer and the top shade. It pays to press the edges of the mask down with a toothpick or a blunt stick, so that paint cannot flow under them. They are lifted off only once the paint has dried, best of all with fine-tipped tweezers. Any remaining adhesive layer on the plastic is removed with a cloth moistened with water; aggressive solvents would attack fresh paint.
