About product

Mitsubishi A6M5 Reisen - double-sided canopy masks, 1:32

A set of painting templates for the canopy glazing of a Mitsubishi A6M5 Reisen model in 1:32 scale, cut for the outer and the inner face of the clear part. It is exactly that double-sided coverage which sets the set apart from the basic variant of masks for the same type.

The frame from both sides

The Reisen has a conspicuously long, strongly divided canopy with a fixed forward section, a sliding center and rear glazing. There are many frames and they are clearly visible. If only the outside is sprayed, the inner face of the frame stays clear and the interior shows through it; in 1:32 scale that is one of the details which immediately give away where a build was cut short. The inner masks make it possible to give the frame the interior shade from inside as well, so that the cockpit looks right from both points of view.

Timing is crucial

The inner face has to be done before the glazing is seated on the fuselage. That means planning the masking at the moment the cockpit is finished and you are about to close it. The inside and the outside can be sprayed in one go with two sets of masks, but it is more reliable to do the inner face first, let it dry and only then deal with the outside.

Tips for working with a clear part

Before applying, degrease the part and let it dry completely. Press the edges of the templates down with the blunt tip of a pair of tweezers, above all in narrow frames, where the film is thinnest. Spray in thin coats, so that no noticeable step builds up on the frame. Take the mask off once it has dried by pulling along the surface, not straight up.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of the Zero with the canopy slid back or removed
  • Modelers who fit the cockpit out and want to see into it
  • Those who are bothered by a clear frame when seen from the interior
  • Everyone who builds in a large scale and deals with the detail of the canopy

FAQ

It refers to the kit release the set is cut for, not to the year of the aircraft. On a type that appeared in several releases this figure helps to distinguish which shape of the parts the mask will seat on.

The basic set deals with the outer face of the glazing only. This one is intended for the inner face as well, so the frame gets the interior shade from inside.

Before the clear part is seated on the fuselage. Once the cockpit is closed, the inner face of the frame can no longer be reached.

It should not, provided you lift it only once the paint has dried, pull along the surface and use the blunt tip of a pair of tweezers instead of the edge of a knife.
