A set of self-adhesive masks for spraying the national insignia on a Nakajima Ki-43-II Hayabusa model in 1:32 scale. The insignia is in the form with a white outline, that is with an outer white ring around the red circle.
Two colors mean two stages
An outlined insignia cannot be done in one pass. First the light area is sprayed, which forms the outline and at the same time serves as the base under the red; once it has dried the center is covered and only then does the colored fill come up. It is precisely because of that order that a ready-made mask is more useful than hand-cut circles: the parts fit into one another and the concentricity of the outline is set by the die cut, not by a hand and a compass. The resulting insignia has no carrier film, so it does not give itself away with a glossy outline on matte camouflage.
The Ki-43-II was a later production version of the light Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa fighter with a more powerful engine. Insignia with a white outline appeared on a number of machines, while on others the circle was without one; the form differed by unit and by period, which is why the mask maker offers both variants separately and the choice is the modeler's according to the scheme they pick.
Spray the white coat patiently and thinned; a covering white tends to go grainy and a rough surface would show through the red. Between the two stages let the paint mature properly, otherwise it will peel when the second mask is applied. Before spraying the red, go over the edge of the mask with a light pass of the base color; any seepage is then sealed with the base color, not with contrasting red. Remove the masks gradually and with an angled pull.
