This add-on set from Armory is made for large models of the first generation Harrier, that is for the GR.1, GR.3, FRS.1 and AV-8A versions. In 1:24 the wheels are among the most conspicuous details of a model, so it pays to replace the plastic parts with a resin casting that carries a detailed tread and sidewall pattern. The tire is cast with sag where it touches the runway, so the finished model really stands on the surface. The set is an add-on to a kit, not a model of the aircraft.
The first generation Harrier is a British combat aircraft with vertical and short takeoff that could operate away from classic concrete runways thanks to its vectored nozzles. The GR.1 and GR.3 versions served in ground support, the FRS.1 in naval use, and the AV-8A was the American counterpart of the type. The landing gear with main wheels on the fuselage centerline and outrigger wheels at the wingtips is characteristic of the Harrier; in a large scale every detail of it shows, including the shape of the tread and the state of the tire.
The castings are big enough for comfortable work. Cut the casting block off with a fine-toothed saw and level the face on sandpaper laid on a flat board. Wash the parts in warm water with dish soap, let them dry and apply primer. Use cyanoacrylate glue for assembly; on larger contact faces epoxy is handy, because it lets you align the part unhurriedly. Paint the tire dark gray, shift the sidewall by a shade so that the area does not read flat, and leave the surface matte. Bring out the tread with a dark wash, go over the edges lightly with a dry brush and put pigment on the contact patch to match the surface the model stands on. Sand resin wet and with your airways protected.
This is an add-on to a plastic kit, not a model in its own right. The set is supplied unpainted; glue, paints and the base kit are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
