An injection-molded plastic kit of the Nissan Cefiro sedan of the A31 generation in the 1991 model year version, in 1:24 from the Japanese maker Aoshima. It is a typical Japanese subject from the so-called youngtimer era, reached for by modelers who build domestic Japanese cars and modified production automobiles. Aoshima reissues this car, though, so other releases with a very similar name exist at the same time. When choosing, therefore, watch which model year and, where applicable, which pattern or modification is involved.
The Nissan Cefiro A31 is a mid-size sedan built from the end of the 1980s. Unlike the later generations it was a car with the engine at the front and rear-wheel drive, fitted with RB-series inline six-cylinder engines. It was exactly the combination of rear drive, accessible mechanicals shared with other models of the brand and a roomy body that made it a popular basis for modification and for drifting, so surviving originals in their first condition are not often met with. The body is characteristically angular, with narrow headlights and a flat front end matching the design style of the turn of the 1980s and 1990s.
On a production car it is the quality of the paint that decides, because the large smooth surfaces of the body reveal every unevenness. It pays to sand the mold seams carefully, spray the body with filler primer and apply the paint with an airbrush in thin coats. Use a gloss clear coat under the decals and clear coat the surface once they have dried. Mask the window frames and trim with tape, not with a brush. The interior and the chassis deserve subdued shades and gentle accenting of the detail, so that they do not read flat.
