The Mark I is the Spitfire in its original form, in which it entered service at the end of the 1930s. Under the cowling worked a Merlin of the third series, in the wing sat eight guns of .303 caliber, and it was exactly this machine that carried the main weight of the defense of British airspace in 1940. The elliptical plan of the wing was no aesthetic whim but a solution to housing the landing gear and the armament inside while keeping a thin section.
A domed cockpit hood cannot be covered with flat film without consequences. A flat surface simply will not lie down on a doubly curved one, and at the point of greatest doming a pucker appears under which paint gets in. The solution is as old as masking itself: lift the film and, where it creases, make a short cut with a scalpel pointing out of the area. The material then folds over itself instead of humping up. The second aid is heat; gentle warming with a hairdryer softens the adhesive enough for the film to creep into the shape by itself.
The cockpit is masked from both sides, and with it four masks for the national insignia and decals. You therefore have the choice of spraying the circles or using the enclosed printed sheet; the two can even be combined, when a different solution suits one side of the fuselage from the other. Reckon on several days for finishing, because each color needs its own time to cure.
