Nightmare Purple is a dark purple shade from the Opaque Colors acrylic line of the Green Stuff World marque. Purple leads a double life in a modeling palette. It is either a color for a surface in its own right or a tool for depth, because a dark purple can stand in for black in shadows and at the same time give a surface the color that a neutral dark tone would swallow.
Purple as a colored shadow
Shadows on a model need not be merely a darkened version of the base color. Setting a dark purple into the recesses of a red, blue or dark gray surface makes the texture richer and the whole model reads as less flat. It works under lighter shades too, where a thin purple intermediate coat evens out the transition between colors.
The shade suits figure painters who work with colored shadows and everyone who builds darkly pitched scenes. Apply it deliberately into the recesses and leave the upper surfaces lighter; that is how readable volume comes about. Stir the contents before work and proceed in thin coats.
