This item is not a kit of the aircraft but an accessory set for a model of the Italian Macchi M.39 racing seaplane in 1:48. It deals with the so-called beaching gear, that is the trolley on which a seaplane was pulled out of the water and moved about on shore. For a model it is an essential thing: an aircraft on floats otherwise has no way of standing, and it is exactly the gear that turns it into a scene that makes sense. Behind the set stands the Hungarian manufacturer SBS Model, which specializes in aircraft accessories and resin kits.
The Macchi M.39 came about for the Schneider Trophy, the most prestigious speed race of the interwar era. It was a monoplane on a pair of floats with a Fiat engine, whose design was subordinated to a single aim, pure speed. In 1926 Mario de Bernardi won the race on it and Italian colors returned to the top thanks to it. Machines of this generation advanced aerodynamics and engine cooling so far that the fighters of the following decade drew on their experience.
Beaching gear is painted on its own and tends to be markedly simpler than the aircraft, which is exactly why it suits treating it as a counterweight to the glossy finish on the fuselage. Metal frames will take a flatter shade, and the wheels wear and fine soiling. Wash the resin parts before painting and lay a primer under them; they are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). A model on its gear stands out nicely on a base with a suggested ramp or a wet jetty.
