This is a casting of the large AERO 1D external fuel tank in 1:32 scale, in the form used by the US Navy and the Marine Corps. It is not an aircraft kit but an external stores accessory that completes a model. A capacity of 300 gallons puts this tank among the larger types, the kind routinely hung on the ventral pylon.
Large auxiliary tanks were a matter of course in carrier aviation. Distances over the sea are long, the carrier moves and the fuel reserve for the return leg decides. You will therefore meet the AERO 1D on a number of American machines across the decades, with the shape of the body and the attachment staying essentially unchanged.
Clean the mold release agent off the casting and cut off the casting block so that the round cross-section is preserved. Even out the surfaces and make the joint with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Tanks tended to be bleached by the sun and dirtied differently from the airframe, so a slight shift in shade and a discreet accent on the panel lines will do the model good. Lettering and markings go on only over a smooth gloss surface.
