A decal sheet in 1:32 scale for the fuselage of a Fokker D.VII built at the Ostdeutsche Albatros Werke plant. According to the name of the product it is the five-color version of the camouflage pattern, and the sheet also includes an interior lozenge for the surfaces visible from inside. This is not a kit but an accessory for a model.

The real subject

Besides the parent plant, the Fokker D.VII was built under license at Albatros and at its Ostdeutsche Albatros Werke branch. The fuselage was formed by a welded steel tube frame with a fabric covering made of preprinted camouflage material, so the pattern was visible inside the cockpit as well. The individual production batches differed in the treatment of the covering and in the layout of the fabric, which is why the fuselage sheets are made for each of them separately and are not interchangeable.

Application tips

What decides the result is the order of work against the clear coat. The sequence that works reliably looks like this: paint, gloss clear, full curing, decals, decal softener, rinsing off the adhesive residue, another thin layer of gloss clear and only at the very end the flat coat and the weathering. That intermediate layer of clear after the decals matters, because it sinks the edge of the film and prevents a wash running around the edges from emphasizing it later. Do not rush it: clear sprayed onto a decal that is still wet can wrinkle or dissolve the pattern.
