The Ansaldo A.1 Balilla was the only fighter aircraft of Italian design that got into series production during the First World War. It came about in 1917 under the direction of Giuseppe Brezzi, it was powered by an SPA inline six-cylinder of around two hundred twenty horsepower and in level flight and in a dive alike it was among the fastest machines of its day. For its weight, though, it was ponderous in a turn, so home pilots gave preference to more agile types and most Balillas ended up in the defense of the interior.
The type lived through its real combat career only in Polish colors. In 1920 Poland bought a batch of these machines and committed them to the war with Soviet Russia, where they flew on reconnaissance, on attacks against cavalry and as fighters. After peace was concluded they served for several more years in training. It is precisely at the machines with the red and white checkerboard that this version is aimed.
The real subject had a span of 7.68 meters and a length of 6.84 meters, so after conversion the finished piece will measure roughly 24 centimeters across the wings and 21 centimeters from the propeller to the tailskid. A biplane from the end of the war stands or falls on the bracing between the lifting surfaces: whoever assembles the struts dry first and checks the angles against the drawing will spare himself trouble at the moment when the glue is already setting. The reward is a silhouette you will meet only rarely on the shelves.
In a collection full of British and German types an Italian fighter comes across as a welcome change. The angular nose, the short fuselage and the robust frame differ from the usual silhouettes enough that the finished piece will draw attention even among much better known neighbors in a display case.
