HGW 1:32 B-25J Mitchell masking set

A masking set for the glazing of the B-25J Mitchell bomber in 1:32 scale from the Czech manufacturer HGW. It is neither a kit nor a finished model: it is an accessory for a model that you are already building. The set belongs to the masking branch of the HGW range; alongside it the brand also makes fabric seat belts, photo-etched parts and other accessories, but this item is a mask only.

What the mask is for

In the large 1:32 scale the Mitchell is a sizeable machine with a glazed nose, a pilot's cockpit, waist gun positions and turrets. There are many frames and each has a different shape. Cutting tape by hand for such a quantity takes a whole evening and the edges tend to be irregular. A shape-cut mask holds the outline exactly, so a straight sharp edge remains after it is taken off and the clear areas are perfectly transparent.

How to use the mask

• Separate the part from the backing with the tip of a scalpel and transfer it onto a clean, degreased clear part.
• Press the film down along the whole outline with a wooden toothpick, mainly in the corners of the frames.
• Cover the open areas with masking tape or with masking fluid.
• First spray the interior shade of the frames, and only then the exterior color of the airframe.
• Take the mask off shortly after the paint has dried and at a sharp angle to the surface.
