Stencils for Allied national insignia and numbers on a captured two-seat Me 262 in 1:32 scale. The insignia is created by spraying, so nowhere is there a silvering edge of carrier film.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Me 262 B was originally a trainer with dual controls and a lengthened canopy; a night fighter modification with radar antennas on the nose grew out of it as well. After the capitulation several of these aircraft came into the hands of American and British test units, which flew them to collection points, loaded them onto a ship and took them apart to the last detail overseas. It was then that the machines received repainted insignia: stars with bars or British roundels went over the original crosses, and with them large registration numbers, often painted in haste and unevenly.
A star with rectangular bars is masked in layers. First the area that will be white is sprayed, then the cutout is laid on and the dark border is added; the internal waste pieces, that is the small islands inside the shape, are transferred separately and it is good to flatten them on glass before work so that they stay level.
Large numbers on the fuselage tend to have thin connecting bridges that hold the sheet together; these are cut off only after transfer, otherwise the shape falls apart in the tweezers. Set the position out along the rivet lines and seams; once pressed down, film shifts badly. Do not leave a stencil on a model longer than necessary: the longer it lies there, the more readily the adhesive bonds to the paint and the greater the risk that the base comes away when it is pulled off. The lifting starts from the smallest islands and only at the end comes the outline, so that the tip of the tweezers cannot get under a raised corner and dig into the paint.
